DVLA Dating/Valuation Service

A useful, and vital (if you have imported a bike, or resurrected one that has been off the road for a long time) service is bike dating. ILOC are authorised by the DVLA to perform this service as an authority of Laverda registration dates.

This service is FREE for ILOC members on the basis of one Dating Letter per calendar year, (if more required these are charged at the £25), Non-ILOC Members £50 per Letter and Commercial Businesses £100 per Letter.

Please contact by email machinedating@iloc.co.uk if you require a machine dating letter to confirm your bike’s year of manufacture for registration purposes.

This can assist with obtaining an age-related registration number or retention of original registration number. The club is authorised by the DVLA to issue these dating letters. A valuation can also provide for insurance purposes and also a letter that confirms a machine is of historic interest.

We can only identify the year of build, not the day or month, nor do we have info on the original supplying dealer, the colour it left the factory in, or original colour codes.

To ensure your request is handled efficiently please read the following requirements carefully:

  1. Take close-up photos or make pencil rubbings on thin white paper using a soft black pencil of the frame and engine numbers.
  2. Take three photos, one from each side of the motorcycle showing full length and one of the rear of the motorcycle to include number plate. Photos MUST be taken at time of request, NOT years ago when you first brought the motorcycle. Photos should be preferably date marked.
  3. Print each photo onto A4 paper.
  4. Prepare a DL self-addressed and correctly stamped envelope.
  5. ILOC members – State your ILOC membership number: this will be used to identify the person whose name will appear on the dating certificate/valuation. Valid membership will be checked. The service is usually free to ILOC members.
Please note that the must be at least roadworthy up to MOT standards.
  6. Confirm Payment if applicable.

This service is run by Volunteers and the request can be turned round swiftly if accurate information is provided, but like everyone else we do go away for weekends and take holidays and have a personal life, so be patient with your enquiry.

Advice on bike registration

You will require a dating letter from a V765 registered club.
If it has been imported you will need a NOVA certificate (available from HMRC if you do not hold one yet).
Once you have these documents go to the DVLA website, complete the V55/5 and pay the fee.
